Carpool Diaries…The Carpool Power Hour

August 11, 2015

Now that the kids are heading back to school is there a time of day where you feel the most productive and less distracted?  A short section of the day when you tackle your to-do list, update your calendar, respond to your emails, etc.  What part of the day do you best conquer your tasks?

I honestly have to say I do some of my best work while sitting in the afternoon carpool lane.   Once I pull the swagger wagon up to the front of the school & hit park this is when the magic begins.    I am confined to my car because I wouldn’t dare leave my coveted space near the front of the carpool line.  Heck, no!  I got there extra early for that prime piece of carpool real estate.  Plus, getting there early is my strategy to begin my fav time of the day.  I can be in control and create my own working atmosphere void of the noise & distraction of the day.  I carry all my tools with me…laptop, calendar, coffee, book & snack.  No interruptions, no worries and my mind is clear to work.  I either am updating my calendar or brainstorming the next blog post.  I find this is when I can be the most creative & uninhibited with my writing when I am fully in the mode to take care of me before I have to take care of them.  (No shame in that!)

One of my goals this year was to be more disciplined in my work as a Blogger & a SAHM.  I believe being more disciplined will create a better purpose and intention in my efforts.  Being disciplined will create more consistency & more routine which will lead to less moments of chaos…..well, at least this is what I hope.

Identifying those quiet times in my day (i.e. carpool moments) gives me an opportunity to be more productive.  Learning how to be productive & disciplined is a skill that we all continue to work on.  In this stage of my life these are the tips that have worked for me to use my time efficiently.  Maybe with some personal tweaking they will work for you.

(Disclaimer:  You don’t have to be a carpooling Mom to utilize these tips.  If you have 30 minutes to an hour a day that you want to take control of these little tidbits might help.)

Tips to a Carpool Power Hour

~Name Your Battle~

Know your goal & visualize what it will look like when completed & how you will feel.  Tell yourself specifically what you want to accomplish in that time period.

~Gather Your Tools~

Come in with everything you need to get the job done. Being prepared  will allow you to make a smooth transition into your power hour.

~Shut Down the Noise~

Avoid the negative self-talk that is cluttering our minds & coaxing us to quick.  Choose to be your biggest fan!  Don’t forget to turn off all distractions…make this hour about you.

~Acknowledge & Reward~

No matter where you stop in your power hour acknowledge the work you did & reward yourself.  Even if you didn’t completely finish your task remember you are closer to the end than where you started.

Afternoon carpool is my Me Time/Let’s Get It Done Time.  Even if you don’t have a “carpool time” in your schedule I hope you can use these short tips to maximize your personal power hour.

After completing this post I’ve decided to make my Tuesday postings dedicated to my “Carpool Diaries”….thoughts of the day or tips & tricks to share.

What do you do to help yourself be more purposeful & productive during your power hour?

Yes!!! The carpool line is time to get things done!!! I’ve never been quite so organized as to come with a plan. Although a couple times I arrived with a “plan” to nap. Does that count??

LOL!!!! The nap counts…yes!!!! All about taking care of ourselves so we can take care of others. Love it! Thank you so much for stopping by A.I.M. & take care! 🙂

My time to get focused is after my kids go to sleep or before they wake up. It’s a lot easier to get things done when I know there won’t be any interruptions. Like you I’m trying to get focused on my role as a SAHM and blogger. I also, want to get more organized with our homeschooling.

I’m right there with you with the morning time. Knowing they are asleep creates a calm but also an urgency to work. We juggle so much as SAHM, blogger & I admire your homeschool journey. I know it is a lot of work, but very rewarding. Good luck & have a great school year. Thank you for stopping by A.I.M.! 🙂

This is GREAT. It seems like (as a SAHM) that sometimes I can be more productive in 25 minutes than I can in two hours. Hope you have a great school year!

Totally agree! Don’t know if it is the time crunch or knowing that the kids could be on our heels any second. Just seems that that small chunck of time works. Best wishes this school year & thank you for stopping by A.I.M.! 🙂

    • All Inspired Mom August 17, 2015 at 3:25 am

Yes! Totally love that! Even if it is just for a little while so we can have a moment to ourselves then afterwards make the transition back to Mommyhood. Thank you for stopping by A.I.M. & take care! 🙂

Tiffani, you are so right on with this post. I wish I had read it LAST year. I used to dread coming to school 30 minutes sometimes 45 minutes early for the prime carpool lane spot. I wasted time…just waiting, staring at other cars and trying to keep my preschooler to stay in the car. Now that my youngest will actually attend preschool, I am definitely taking your advice. What a fantastic time to write. To brainstorm. To catch up on emails. I LOVE IT! BTW, thank you for linking up with us on Welcome Home Wednesday! Please come by and share more next Wednesday =)

Love the link up & can’t wait for the next one. OMG, I remember those carpool with toddler in the backseat days. I hope this school year you will have those quiet moments to yourself during carpool. Honestly, you will be rushing to get into the carpool line! Best wishes & thank you for stopping by A.I.M.! 🙂

These are great tips! I’m not a mom, but utilizing the hidden chunks of day that otherwise could be wasted, is something I’m trying to be more intentional about! Thanks!

    • All Inspired Mom August 17, 2015 at 3:20 am

I love your goal of being more “intentional”! That is something I really want to work on instead of just being “busy” all the time. Finding those quiet moments in the day are such gifts. I wish you many of those moments. Thank you for stopping by A.I.M. & take care! 🙂
