Grand Opening of the Apex Skate Park

August 24, 2015

Grab Your Skateboards & Let’s Go!

Half-pipes, Quarter pipes, Bowls, Ramps“….what do these words mean to you?  Not until the new Rodgers Family Skate Plaza at Trackside came to our town did I even know. Honestly, I still don’t know all the skateboarding lingo, but I do know that to my kiddos it translates to, “let’s go to the skate park!

A couple of Saturdays ago was the grand opening to the new 13,000 square foot Rodgers Family Skate Plaza at Trackside here in Apex. For months my kids and I have passed by the skate park watching the workers break the ground, dig up the earth and lay the concrete.  So when the grand opening rolled around they couldn’t wait to check it out.

(Here are some pics of the skateboarding park before it got too crowded.)

I’m no expert in skate parks let alone the sport of skateboarding.  However, I will admit I do enjoy watching the pros on the extreme sport programs. The ramps and flow of the park were amazing to see!  Honestly, this is impressive artistry and architecture by TEAM PAIN, who the Town of Apex brought in to design the Trackside Skate Park.  Watching the many of generations of skateboarding enthusiasts “getting it in” was so much fun.  There were teens, Dads & young kids all having a great time showcasing their skills.

To keep the skateboarding celebration going there were booths of vendors lining the parking lot giving away freebies.  Even Wake Orthopaedic was handing out free helmets and pads to the kids along with providing a short seminar on skateboard safety.  As a Mom I greatly appreciated this!

The grand opening also brought out food trucks…of, course this was the highlight for me.  The hubs and I dashed over to the Chirba Chirba truck because we love to try new food.  Plus the kiddos were watching the skateboard competition which meant we could have a free moment to ourselves.   Chirba Chirba specializes in Chinese style dumplings that will make your tastebuds dance with joy!

Dumplings from Chirba Chirba Food Truck

We ordered the “Poultrygeist” & the “Juicy Buns”.  Don’t you love the names?!?  I grabbed my chopsticks & dove into this sweet & spicy deliciousness.  The heat & spices from the dumplings were perfect together.  Each dumpling was its only little package of happiness!  Eeekk…I will definitely be on the lookout for Chirba Chirba’s big yellow dumpling truck at the next foodtruck rodeo.

Sparkling Ice Booth

Cooling off at the Sparkling Ice booth. FYI…Don’t let my arm cast distract you. Been dealing with a broken finger, ugh!

Afterwards we decided to pop over to the Sparkling Ice booth to cool ourselves from the heat of the sun & the dumplings.  Sparkling Ice was giving out free bottles of their flavored sparkling water.

Sparkling Ice flavored sparkling water...yummy treat.

The flavors looked tempting and I had to taste for myself  I popped open a bottle of Kiwi Strawberry and found it to be sweet & tangy.  My kiddos were so excited to be able to choose their own flavor & have their own bottle of this yummy treat.  Mental note…Sparkling Ice + Family Pizza Night = Yum!

The grand opening to the Trackside Skate Park was a perfect family outing.  Being able to enjoy the festivities and watch folks jump on their skateboards and test out the ramps & obstacles was a lot of fun.  From tricks, to speed to jumps we saw it all.

As a Mom what impressed me the most while watching the whirlwind of boarders was the unspoken code in the skateboarding community.    I observed lots of atta-boys when tricks were performed, a helping hand when someone fell or lost their board & even words of encouragement to the anxious skater who was hopping on for the first time.  I was in the works of a fast forming community celebrating each other here at our new skate park.  Isn’t that what its all about…the love of the sport and comaraderie?  If this is one of the many benefits of having Trackside Skate Plaza here in our Apex Community then a huge thank you goes out to the organizations and individuals who worked hard to bring Trackside to us.  My family has enjoyed this new addition to our town & they look forward to honing their skills on the ramps.

The park sounds awesome. We have one in downtown Durham but, I’d love to take the kids to visit the Apex skate park. Glad you had a great time at the grand opening.

Jen, I didn’t know Durham had a skate park? Where? Yes, you gotta check this Apex’s park out…one of my favorite features are the benches and the covered awning where I can sit and watch the kiddos. Thank you for stopping by A.I.M. & take care! 🙂

How very cool. I’ll have to pass this along to my line sister, her son will love this!

Hey, Jen! They would have a good time! We have been there on the weekends and there is a covered area where I can sit & watch the kiddos skate. Then right down the street is Main Street filled with good restaurants & an old fashioned ice cream parlor. Can make for a fun day! Thank you so much for stopping by A.I.M. & take care! 🙂

I’m a klutz when it comes to skateboarding, so just park me beside the food trucks and I’ll cheer everyone on! Looks like a fun place to hang out and watch those amazing, talented skaters!

Alli, you and I both! So much talent there, but my place was definitely beside the food! Thank you for stopping by A.I.M.! Take care!

Paris, it was pretty cool. Made me want to slap on some pads, a helmet & jump in on the fun…too bad I don’t know how to skateboard. Every event is always better with a food truck, right? Thank you so much for stopping by A.I.M.! Take Care! 😉

I’m in Cary so we’ve heard about the park but we haven’t been yet. We are going to have to check it out. My kids will love it.

Allison, definitely check out the Skate Park. It is amazing to see all the skaters doing their tricks and tackling the ramps. There is also a playground, soccer field and a walking trail if your kiddos want to take a break from skateboarding. Thank you so much for stopping by & take care!

Thank you for sharing this with Welcome Home Wednedays Link Party! We have a skate park here where I live too and it is so much fun to see the kids go out there and do some amazing stunts. I would be so scared that I would hurt myself if I even tried.

Lisa, I’m right there with you. So much fun to see all the talent on the ramps. Wish I had learned how to skateboard when I was a kid. Yup, I’d probably break an arm the minute I put my foot on the board. Thank you so much for stopping by and I love the Welcome Home Wednesday link up! 🙂
