This weekend while sipping on my morning coffee I heard the words “Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market” announced on the morning news. I quickly put down my cup of joe and planted my eyes on the t.v. screen…with a name like that I knew I had to check it out.
The Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market is an event that is held by Rusted Roots, an amazing vintage repurposing shop, in Hillsborough, N.C. that is owned by Candace Herrero. Candace rescues old treasures and restores or upcycles them into new beauties. Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market is back for its second year and showcases vendors from all over North Carolina. (This goodness is held quarterly…check out the dates here.)
I knew that going to the Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market was going to be a perfect family adventure for us. Honestly, the last time the kids saw something “old” was when my oldest son picked up a Polaroid camera and yelled, “Look, Mom, an antique!” Ugh, I just shook my head. Hmmm…I knew their mouths would drop open once they checked out the goodies that the Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market was showcasing.
The whole market was AMAZING!!!! Walking up, honestly, I didn’t know where to begin. Vendors, food trucks, the Rusted Roots store and even a stage for live music…EEK! 🙂 Each vendor’s space looked like its own little store & I couldn’t wait to get lost in it! Check out the first one we came across…
The Copy Cat Arts & Crafts shop had a beautiful display of black & white chevron creations along with farm inspired paintings & gorgeous window pane hangings. (I do love those window panes….I need to get my act together and bring one of those babies home with me sometime.) But, what stopped me in my tracks was the jaw dropping vintage camper they had parked beside their tent. The way that the camper was decorated….(honey, did you see the CHEVRON?….be still my beating heart.) looked like a crafter’s paradise. If you see this baby parked out at your next market or craft show run on over & check it out. You will be tickled at how cute it is….hmmm, you might even want one for yourself.
Can you believe that this rusted beauty pulled the Copy Cat camper all the way to the showcase? Perfect for this junk market, right?!?
The Twisted Sister was our next stop. I just love this name….I know these ladies probably have the best sense of humor! Twisted Sister had antique finds from pendants made out of old book pages, hand sewn American Flag Pillows to the cutest & tiniest antique play oven you have ever seen!
Look at the character of the trunk & re-upholstered “come sit for a spell” black & red chair. Feast your eyes on those red door frames….I need those in my life! Pop on over to their Facebook page & check them out along with the adorable vintage oven I couldn’t take my eyes off of!
The party kept going when we moved onto to The Field of Poppies. These ladies specialize in handmade and consigned home decor. As a book loving, paper hoarding, stationery addict girl I was in heaven. From the handcrafted wreath made of old sheets music to the upcycyled handmade journals…. I was in awe!
Look how they repurposed this old desk into a children’s lego table! Amazing & I love the red coat of paint…I’m a sucker for red. My youngest son was enamoured by the Lego inspired soap pumps. A soap dispenser filled with lego pieces with the words, “Block the Germs” on the front of the bottle……yup, had to have it! If this wonderful find will make my baby boy actually use soap (Can I get an “Amen” from all the Mama’s of boys?!?) I was all for it! Plus the bottle would look so cute in the kid’s bathroom. 🙂
Hello, lovely chalk writing wrapped in green & blue….if only I could have my kitchen in these colors. Gotta work on that! 🙂
Handmade Journals!!! If you have been keeping up with my blog or Instagram page you know that handmade journals are my weakness. Knowing that each journal was unique and handcrafted made my heart sing.
My daughter has a serious relationship with anything owl themed so she had to have a picture taken of the porcelain owl. Check out the owl & pendant canvas behind her…..love it! Isn’t everything just better with a pendant banner attached?!? Hop on over to their Facebook Page to see more handmade cuteness.
We were having a blast, but it was time for an ice cream break! The Two Roosters Ice Cream truck (or should I say amazing Ice Cream Camper) was the first thing my kiddos spotted when we hit the market. Guess, what they were selling….LUCKY CHARMS ICE CREAM! My bunch loves Lucky Charms cereal and now they could have the best of both worlds….marshmallows & ice cream all in. Folks this spectacular treat was the real-deal.…actual Lucky Charm marshmallows inside the ice cream!
As a Mama I was overjoyed to see my kiddos devour this new treat and happy to know that Two Roosters specializes in homemade goodness. Check out their website and be amazed at how many of their signature ingredients are bought locally…..even down to the milk & cream from a nearby dairy farm.
You can’t have a vintage camper without a matching souped up Ford Classic Pickup……love it! The kids and I will be keeping an eye out for this goodness at the next market or food truck event.
Ok….ice cream, wooden spoons & smiles……pure summertime goodness that makes me happy! Thank you, Two Roosters!
The Fire Chef Raleigh food truck also came out to share their smokin’ hot eats! Don’t you love the look of an old fire engine? Awesome slogan, too….”Put some FIRE in your belly!” Definitely, going to catch back up with this food truck goodness back home in Raleigh.
Our next stop was to the Pretty Clever Words booth and it was talking to me! I mean, really, I couldn’t stop reading all the clever phrases, poems and “tell it like it ’tis” quotes that this crafter had cleverly put on embroidery hoops to wooden plaques. Isn’t it amazing when you see everyday items turned into something new! Pop on over to their Facebook Page and see what is new.
Feast your eyes on this!
Look at all these goodies! Perfect for a beach house or future beach house. Hint, hint….. I hope you are reading this, Hubby?
Walking into Mintage Mod was like entering into an antique haven. Mintage Mod had a variety of lovely antiques from furniture, to jewelry, to home decor to even outfits that I couldn’t get enough of. Look at all the beauties they have prettied up!
Don’t you just want to snatch that pretty chest of drawers up & bring it home?
The glassware and the china reminded me so much of my Grandmother’s collection. Walking through Mintage Mod left me feeling very nostalgic, but also reminded me of how these collections can still be incorporated in our everyday lives through either decor or repurposing. All they need is a little love! Keep up with the goodness on their Facebook page.
Here are a some more views that we took in at the Rusted Roots SummerJunk Market.
Before we came to Rusted Roots my youngest had been begging me to show him a typewriter. (Oh, man! I must be getting old….I remember taking typewriting back in middle school.) Well, guess what, he found 3 on his own during our junk market exploration! He was so excited & surprised to see how different each one looked. Hmmmm….next time I come out I’m going to create a “Junk Market Scavenger Hunt Sheet” for my kiddos & see how many antiques they can find.
When you are at the Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market where do you park your feet? Why at the bench made from an old Ford tailgate, of course?!?
It’s a good day……they are still smiling! Plopping themselves on the huge tailgate bench made them even happier. 🙂
We finished off our visit with a stop inside the Rusted Roots store. Can you believe there were even more awesome finds to be seen right there in the store?
We even ran into the amazing Candace Herrero, owner of Rusted Roots & the force behind this junky extravaganza! I could tell immediately that she LOVES what she does. Candace is creating so much joy by bringing all these folks together to celebrate the past & the present. Isn’t it truly inspiring to see someone who is passionate about their purpose?!? Plus, she is as sweet as can be and made me feel like I was talking to a friend. You have to check out her website. So many creative projects, fun finds & tutorials going on there. Plus, her southern candor & sense of humor will have you rollin’ on the floor laughing.
Take a look at the beauties she was showcasing in the shop…
Hello, lovely red letters….oh, how I wish I could take you home. Maybe next time! 🙂
Blue colored mason jars….’nuff said…now that’s a great find!
Now this was one of my favorite corners in the shop. Wooden plaques with inspirational quotes, funny sayings & Southern charm.
More lovelies….can’t look away can you?!? Hee, hee!
Look at those rusted words above all these vintage beauties….so much fun & so pretty!!
Family…that’s what it is all about. 🙂
Our visit to the Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market was incredible & I honestly can’t wait for the next junk market to open up! Check out the dates here….the markets are held quarterly so within two flips of your calendar page another one will be coming your way.
Oh, last but not least….here is a little peek of what we brought home with us.
We all had a fabulous time at the Rusted Roots Summer Junk Market and I truly look forward to coming back again. Gorgeous antiques, amazing upcycles, yummy eats & good music makes for a perfect day of family fun! Go get your junky on at the next Rusted Roots Market!
